7th December 2009 - scheduled meeting

Luton Borough Council Executive

At this meeting the Luton Borough Council (LBC) Executive Committee will consider the Liberal Democrat motion that was passed at the Full Council meeting on 3rd November 2009.  The Full Council voted in favour of LBC withdrawing their support for the use of Green Belt land to the east of Luton - in North Herts.- as a preferred expansion area, at least in its “present form”.  That is to say as an expansion area for the building of 5,500 houses and associated bypasses and other supporting infrastructure.

The original motion was carefully worded and the full text can be found here:

If endorsed by the LBC Executive meeting, the result of this motion having been carried and endorsed will be that Luton Borough Council will have to re-submit its response to the consultation on the existing Core Strategy.

In its turn, the Joint Planning Committee will, when it next meets on 18th December 2009, then have to consider the changed response from one of its two most important stakeholders.

The most likely outcome will be that the Joint Technical Unit who work for the JPC being asked to re-work the existing Core Strategy to take heed of the new LBC stance.

There are 3 possible scenarios that are possible, referred in this site timeline as Options 1, 2 & 3 - KEOLG has looked at the 3 options and given the group’s commentary on each one.
